Ms. Mydland
I’m still getting used to being
addressed as Ms. Mydland or Ms. M as my younger students say...every time I hear
those words a tiny piece of me lights up. It took me countless hours of lesson plans and
too many licensing exams to count before I could be addressed in such a way. So
it’s a good feeling when that time comes. I may not be teaching the subject I thought I
would but that is fine by me. I’ve learned more from my ESL students the last
year than I did in any college practicum.
One thing they don’t teach you in
school is the impact you are going to have. Tonight, while at school conferences,
I was embraced by a 7 year old running full speed towards me with open arms
yelling "Ms. M, Ms. M I want you to meet my mommy" Now I tell you
what, seeing someone that excited to see you is something that can make
even the grouchiest of people crack a smile. So tonight brought
me endless amounts of heartfelt introductions and I couldn’t be more
appreciative.
I know few professions that can bring
as many opportunities for smiles, laughs, imaginations, hugs, and stickers like
teaching does. Yeah sometimes I have difficult days but each day
brings at least a couple grins and giggles. I know you can't get those feelings
from sitting behind a desk, starring at a computer screen. So tonight I just
want to say how thankful I am for having a job I truly love.
How lucky am I?
